Role of Manganese in Potato Production

Manganese plays a role in chlorophyll synthesis and it is a critical component in the chlorophyll molecule itself. It is also responsible for activation of plant enzymes.

Manganese and yield

Severe manganese deficiency can significantly reduce yield.

Manganese and dry matter

Severe manganese deficiency can also significantly reduce dry matter content.

General guidelines for manganese application

Manganese behaves in a similar manner to magnesium in the potato plant, supporting a number of biochemical processes. However, unlike magnesium, manganese is extremely immobile in the plant and moves only upwards via the xylem to the leaves. Once in the leaves, there is no transference to other parts of the plant.
